A curious nine-year-old girl named Zai, bored on a rainy afternoon, discovers a sky-colored riddle left by her beloved grandmother, leading her and her little brother on a captivating adventure to uncover a hidden box of cherished memories and a deeper connection to family.

📖 Read the Story

Zai, nine years old, lived in Brgy. Bukal. Her favorite color was 'all of sky.' She loved watching the clouds drift by, imagining shapes and stories in the endless blue.

With Mama Jocelyn and Papa Rusthon, and siblings Warren, Rose Ann, and Rusthan, her home was always full. Sometimes, when bored, Zai would nap, dreaming of adventures.

One rainy afternoon, Zai was very bored. She explored Mama's old books. Deep inside a dusty photo album, a tiny, folded paper peeked out. What could it be?

It was an old drawing! Faded lines showed a path, a big tree, and a small, sparkling circle. On the back, a riddle: 'Where the sky meets the earth, and water sings a soft tune, look for a hidden moon.'

Zai's eyes widened. No more boredom! This was a real mystery! She remembered Lola, her grandmother, who always loved riddles and the beautiful color of the sky.

'What's that, Ate Zai?' asked little Rusthan, peeking over her shoulder. 'A treasure map!' Zai whispered, her voice full of excitement. Rusthan clapped his hands.

'Where the sky meets the earth...' Zai thought. 'That must be the horizon! Or maybe a place where the sky feels very, very close to me.'

...and water sings a soft tune.' Zai knew! Brgy. Bukal had a special spring, a 'bukal,' where water bubbled gently. Lola always said it sang.

'Let's go to the spring!' Zai declared. Rusthan bounced with glee. They put on their rain boots. The rain had stopped, leaving everything fresh and green.

At the spring, the air smelled sweet. Zai looked for a 'hidden moon.' Near a smooth, mossy rock, she found a small, round, sky-blue stone, like a tiny moon.

The stone had a tiny etched symbol: a swirl, like a cloud. And another riddle! 'Under the oldest, tallest green, where sweet fruits hang unseen, a whisper waits, serene.'

'Oldest, tallest green...' Zai pondered. 'And sweet fruits...' She remembered the giant mango tree near their house, planted by Lola years ago. It was very old.

They hurried back, Rusthan running ahead. The huge mango tree stood tall, its branches reaching like arms. Zai felt a tingle of anticipation.

Under the tree, Zai searched. She pressed her ear to the trunk, remembering 'a whisper waits.' She heard nothing. Then, Rusthan pointed to a loose root.
