📖 Read the Story
Xavier the Xerus lived in a vast, golden desert. The sun was a giant, warm hug in the sky, but it rarely brought rain. Xavier's sandy fur blended perfectly with the dunes.
Every morning, he scampered over sun-baked rocks, searching for tasty roots and seeds. His bright, curious eyes always watched for anything new or interesting.
One scorching afternoon, Xavier spotted a tiny splash of pale pink. It was a flower, smaller than his paw, wilting sadly beside a jagged rock.
Its petals were curled, its stem bent low. "Oh dear," whispered Xavier, his heart feeling a little squeeze. "You look so thirsty, little friend."
He knew how precious water was here. A single drop could mean the difference between life and dryness. He had to find some, quickly!
Xavier scurried to the nearest thorny bush. He licked a dewdrop from a spiky leaf, but it was barely enough for himself. The flower needed more.
He dug a small hole near the flower, hoping to find moisture deep in the sand. But the earth was bone-dry, crumbling between his tiny paws.
A tiny sigh escaped him. The sun climbed higher, making the desert shimmer. The little flower drooped even further, its pink fading to white.
Xavier sat very still, listening to the desert's quiet hum. He noticed a line of tiny ants, marching purposefully towards a cluster of smooth, dark rocks.
"Ants always know where to find the good things," he mumbled. A flicker of hope sparked in his heart. He decided to follow their trail.
The ants led him around the rocks, then down into a narrow crevice. The air grew cooler, and a faint, damp smell tickled his nose.
Deeper and deeper he went, until he emerged into a small, hidden grotto. And there it was! A tiny pool of crystal-clear water, reflecting the dim light.
It was a secret spring, bubbling up from deep within the earth! Xavier dipped a paw in; the water was cool and refreshing. He had found it!
But how to carry water back to the flower? He couldn't just scoop it in his paws; it would spill. He looked around, thinking hard.
