📖 Read the Story
Penelope the pig loved the Harvest Festival. The air smelled of sweet apples, warm hay, and freshly baked pumpkin pie. Her curly tail wiggled with delight.
Her best friend, Quincy the quail, darted above the colorful stalls, chirping with glee. He zipped past streamers, his tiny wings a blur of brown.
Penelope watched Quincy soar, loop-de-looping in the sky. Oh, how she wished she could fly too! It looked like such a grand adventure up there.
Quincy zipped past, his little plume bobbing. "Come on, Penelope! You can see everything from up here!" he called down, his voice bright.
But Penelope could only trot on the ground. A little sigh escaped her snout. Flying looked like so much fun, so free and exciting.
The festival buzzed with laughter and happy chatter. Children chased each other through hay bales, and lively music filled the air. Banners fluttered gently.
Suddenly, the wind began to whisper. Then it howled, tugging fiercely at the bright decorations and making the leaves swirl in circles.
The big, striped tent flapped wildly. Pumpkins rolled from their piles, and apple baskets tumbled over. Oh dear, a very strong gust!
Colorful streamers ripped loose and danced away. The big "Harvest Blessings" banner, tied to two poles, began to lift, higher and higher!
Animals and people gasped. "The decorations!" cried a little mouse, scurrying. "They're blowing away! Our beautiful festival is ruined!"
Penelope saw the banner's loose corner flapping. Without a second thought, she pushed her strong, sturdy snout against it, holding it down.
She grunted and pushed with all her might. Her sturdy snout held the heavy fabric firm against the ground, stopping it from flying away.
Up above, Quincy saw everything. The wind swirled, making it hard to see where to go, and tiny bits of hay flew into his eyes.
He spotted a squirrel family lost in the swirling leaves, looking scared. "This way!" he chirped loudly, guiding them to a safe, sturdy tree.
