A brilliant, logical young scientist, Penny Pumpernickel, attempts to apply scientific methods to understand the confusing, fluttery feelings she experiences for a charming classmate, only to discover that some mysteries are best understood by the heart, not the lab.

Penelope Pumpernickel considered herself a scientist of the highest order. Her room, a glorious explosion of gears, gadgets, and textbooks, was her laboratory. Today’s mission: perfecting her automatic toast-buttering machine. Professor Whiskers, her ginger cat, observed with a critical flick of his tail.

Penny believed everything could be understood with logic and a good hypothesis. Emotions? Flimsy, illogical things. She preferred the predictable laws of gravity or the satisfying fizz of a chemical reaction. 'See, Professor?' she murmured, 'The butter must be applied at a precise 45-degree angle.'

Professor Whiskers, a connoisseur of fine napping, merely blinked. He’d seen Penny’s inventions before. They usually resulted in minor explosions, unexpected glitter showers, or, like the toast machine, a perfectly squashed breakfast. Penny, however, remained undeterred. Science marched on!

Then, one Tuesday morning, something entirely illogical happened. Penny was striding through the school hallway, deep in thought about quantum physics, when she saw him. Leo Lovelace. He was leaning against a locker, laughing at a joke.

His hair was the color of sunshine, his smile could power a small city, and his eyes sparkled like freshly polished constellations. Penny’s brain, usually a whirring supercomputer, suddenly felt like a tangled ball of yarn dipped in glitter. *Whumph!*

Her books tumbled, but Penny didn't notice. A strange, fluttery sensation erupted in her chest, like a flock of very confused butterflies. Her cheeks felt hot, her knees wobbly. 'Aha!' she gasped, scrambling up. 'A new scientific phenomenon! I shall call it… Handsome-Boy-itis!'

Back in her lab, Penny got to work. Professor Whiskers, perched precariously on her head, sighed. 'This 'Handsome-Boy-itis' requires immediate, rigorous investigation!' she declared. She pulled out every medical textbook she owned, searching for symptoms: accelerated heart rate, flushed cheeks, sudden clumsiness.

'It’s a peculiar affliction,' she mumbled, making notes. 'Highly contagious, apparently. And the primary vector seems to be… optimal facial symmetry and a dazzling smile.' Professor Whiskers swatted at a loose strand of her hair, unimpressed by her scientific deductions.

Her hypothesis: to understand Handsome-Boy-itis, she must observe its source. Her plan: meticulous, covert observation of Subject Leo Lovelace. 'For science!' she whispered, adjusting her binoculars. Professor Whiskers rolled his eyes so hard, he almost fell off her shoulder.

The next day, Penny became a master of disguise. Or, at least, she thought she did. She hid behind the playground’s smallest bush, binoculars glued to her face, scribbling notes on Leo’s every move. 'Subject exhibits high agility,' she wrote, 'and a remarkable ability to kick a ball.'

Suddenly, Leo looked up. He saw the bush, which seemed to be trembling slightly. He saw the binoculars. He smiled and waved. Penny froze. Her heart did a triple somersault, then a dizzying pirouette. *More symptoms!* she thought, scribbling furiously.

Her observations continued. She tried to blend in by pretending to be a statue next to the flagpole. She attempted to 'accidentally' trip near him, hoping to gather data on his helpfulness. Leo just thought she was very clumsy, but always offered a kind hand.

'Barnaby,' Penny whispered dramatically during lunch, 'my Handsome-Boy-itis is worsening! My stomach feels like a washing machine full of glitter!' Barnaby Button, her best friend and self-proclaimed expert on everything, leaned closer.

'Ah, Penny,' Barnaby declared, 'this is classic 'Love-Struck Syndrome'! You must perform a grand gesture! A serenade! A love potion! Something from a movie!' Penny's scientific brain whirred. A grand gesture? A love potion? This sounded like an experiment!

'Aha!' Penny exclaimed. 'Barnaby, you're a genius! I shall combine science with sentiment! A scientific serenade! A glittery love potion! This will surely cure my Handsome-Boy-itis, or at least help me understand its effects!' Professor Whiskers groaned.

The next day, Penny climbed onto a cafeteria table. 'ATTENTION, SUBJECT LOVELACE!' she boomed through a megaphone. 'My heart rate, currently 120 beats per minute, is directly proportional to your charming smile! Oh, H2O, you make my heart glow!' Leo, mid-sandwich, nearly choked.

Next, the 'love potion.' It was a concoction of fizzy lemonade, rainbow sprinkles, and a liberal dose of Penny’s emergency glitter supply. 'For your Handsome-Boy-itis, Subject Lovelace!' she announced, presenting the bubbling beaker. Professor Whiskers tried to bat it away.
