Lily bounced into Grandma Rose’s kitchen, her eyes wide with a delicious idea. “Grandma, can we make a cake today? A big, yummy one, just for us?” she asked, practically wiggling with excitement.

Grandma Rose chuckled, her kind eyes twinkling. “A cake? What a wonderful idea, my sweet pea! But baking a cake takes time and a little bit of magic. Are you ready for an adventure?”

First, they gathered everything. Flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter lined up on the counter. “Each ingredient has a special job,” Grandma explained. Lily carefully placed each item, feeling like a real chef.

“Now, for the flour,” Grandma said, handing Lily a measuring cup. “Too much or too little can change our cake. We need exactly two cups, level with the top.” Lily scooped carefully, making sure it was just right.

Next came the sugar, then a pinch of salt, and baking powder. “These dry friends need to mix well before we add anything wet,” Grandma taught. Lily used a whisk, stirring slowly, watching the white powders swirl together.

“Why can’t I mix super fast, Grandma?” Lily asked, wanting to make it quicker. “Because then our flour would fly everywhere!” Grandma laughed. “And we want a smooth batter, not a floury storm.”

Then came the eggs, cracked open with a gentle tap, and the creamy milk. Lily poured them in, watching the dry ingredients soak up the liquids. The mix started to look like a thick, golden river.

Lily stirred and stirred, her arm getting a little tired. The batter transformed from lumpy to smooth, thick, and perfectly golden. It smelled sweet and promised deliciousness. “Almost ready for its warm bed!” Grandma announced.

They carefully poured the thick batter into a round cake pan. Lily made sure every last drop was scraped from the bowl. “We don’t want to waste any of this goodness,” she declared.

“Now, for the oven,” Grandma said, her voice a little lower. “It gets very, very hot inside, so only grown-ups open this door. It’s where our cake will grow big and fluffy.”

Grandma carefully slid the pan into the warm oven. Lily pressed her nose against the cool glass door, watching the batter. It looked exactly the same. “How will it change?” she wondered.

“Now comes the hardest part,” Grandma whispered, setting a timer. “Waiting.” Lily sighed. Waiting felt like forever! Grandma suggested they read a story while the oven worked its magic.

“Inside the oven, the heat wakes up the baking powder,” Grandma explained, reading from a book. “It makes tiny bubbles that puff up the batter, turning it from liquid to a soft, solid cake.”

Soon, a warm, sweet scent began to drift from the oven, filling the whole kitchen. Lily took a deep breath. “Mmm, it smells like happiness!” she exclaimed, her impatience fading with each delicious whiff.
