The Little Scientist of El Naranjal
A young, inquisitive boy uses his love for science to uncover the hidden cause of a mysterious blight affecting his town's beloved orange groves, proving that even the smallest scientist can solve the biggest problems.

Mateo loved his small coastal town, El Naranjal. But most of all, he loved science! His room was like a tiny laboratory, full of curious things he had found.
He carefully observed everything, from tiny seashells on the beach to the buzzing bees in the orange groves. Mateo always asked, 'Why?' and 'How does it work?'
El Naranjal was famous for its sweet, juicy oranges. Every year, the trees burst with golden fruit, filling the air with a wonderful, fresh scent.
Farmers like Miguel worked hard, tending to the groves. Their oranges were sent all over Spain, making everyone happy with a taste of sunshine.
But one sunny morning, something was wrong. The leaves on the orange trees looked dull and droopy. The bright oranges seemed to be shriveling.
Farmer Miguel sighed, his face filled with worry. "The trees are sick," he told Abuela Elena. "We don't know what to do."
Mateo heard their sad voices. He loved the oranges, and he loved his town. A knot of worry tightened in his stomach. He knew he had to help.
He remembered his science books. "When something is sick, you need to investigate!" he whispered to himself. He grabbed his trusty magnifying glass and notebook.
First, Mateo looked closely at the leaves. Then he examined the bark. He even sniffed the air, just like a detective. Nothing seemed obviously wrong.
"Hmm," he thought, tapping his chin. "If it's not the leaves or the bark, maybe it's something hidden. Something under the ground!"
Mateo carefully dug a small hole near a wilting tree. He collected a sample of the soil in a jar. Then he took a healthy soil sample from a thriving tree.
Back in his "lab," Mateo compared the two samples. Under his magnifying glass, the sick soil looked different. It was dry and crumbly, missing tiny, important bits.
"Aha!" Mateo exclaimed. "The soil is missing nutrients! It's like the trees aren't getting enough to eat." He quickly wrote down his findings.
He rushed to find Farmer Miguel. "I know what's wrong!" Mateo announced, holding up his notebook. "The soil needs special food to help the trees grow strong again!"
