The Garden's Secret

Niomi lived in a happy home with her three children. There was Nifai, Lona, and little Mehlani. They loved their days together.

Their favorite place was the garden, right outside their door. It was a wonderland of colors, buzzing bees, and dancing butterflies.

One sunny morning, Nifai explored the garden path. "Look!" he whispered, pointing to a big green leaf. Lona leaned in closer.

A tiny, striped caterpillar was munching, munching, munching! It was so small, but its jaws were busy. Mehlani asked, "What is that?"

Niomi came over, her smile soft. "That's a baby butterfly," she explained. "It's called a caterpillar. It eats leaves to grow."

The children decided to visit their new friend every day. They watched it eat and grow. It was quite a hungry little creature!

Days turned into a week. The caterpillar grew bigger and bigger. Lona drew its journey, showing how much it had changed.

"Wow!" Nifai exclaimed. "It's so much fatter!" Mehlani giggled. "It's eating all the leaves!" Niomi nodded.

"It's getting ready for a very special sleep," Niomi told them. "A big transformation will happen while it rests."

One morning, the caterpillar was gone! Nifai searched all over the leaf. "Where did it go?" he worried.

"There!" Lona pointed, his eyes sharp. Hanging upside down was a beautiful, green, jewel-like object. It was still and quiet.

"That's a chrysalis," Niomi whispered. "Inside, our caterpillar is changing. It's not a fuzzy cocoon like a moth, but a hard chrysalis."

They waited patiently, visiting the chrysalis every day. It didn't move, it didn't eat. It just hung there, a secret in the garden.
