Lilyβs best friend was Professor Pipsqueak. He was a fluffy, purple owl with big, sparkly green eyes.
Every morning, Lily squeezed him tight. 'Hoo-hoo! Hi, Lily!' Professor Pipsqueak would always say.
But this morning, something was different. Lily woke up. She reached for her special friend.
Her hand felt empty. Professor Pipsqueak was gone! Her heart did a little flutter-thump.
Lily looked under her bed. She looked in her toy chest. No Pipsqueak anywhere.
Then, on her windowsill, she saw it. A tiny, shimmering purple feather. It sparkled!
Lily peered closer. The window was open just a crack. And a small, muddy print was there.
'Who took Professor Pipsqueak?' she whispered. 'And why isn't he saying 'Hi'?'
Lily grabbed her magnifying glass. She followed tiny marks to her garden, feeling very brave.
Barnaby the squirrel chattered from the big oak tree. He seemed to point with his nose.
High up in the branches, something purple peeked out. It was Professor Pipsqueak!
He looked a bit stuck. Lily tried to reach, but the tree was too tall. Oh, dear!
Mrs. Higgins was watering her flowers. 'Good morning, Lily!' she smiled. 'Did you see the magpie?'
'The magpie loves shiny things!' Mrs. Higgins added. 'It took my sparkly button yesterday.'
