Xavier sighed, kicking at a loose stone. "There's nothing to do!" he grumbled. His friends, Lily and Sam, nodded in agreement. Their afternoon playdate felt a bit dull.
Xavier looked around his backyard. It was mostly green grass, a few dandelions, and a tired old swing set. No secret forts, no exciting bugs, just… grass.
Lily, ever the adventurer, clapped her hands. "I know! Let's peek into Mr. Henderson's garden! It always looks like a magical place."
The three friends tiptoed to the fence separating Xavier’s yard from his neighbor’s. They carefully peered over. Wow! Mr. Henderson’s garden was bursting with colors.
Bright red poppies, purple lavender, and sunny yellow sunflowers stood tall. The air hummed with a gentle, busy sound. What was that noise?
"Look!" whispered Sam, pointing. "Bees! And butterflies!" A big, fuzzy bumblebee zipped past Xavier’s nose. Xavier wondered why his garden didn't have so much life.
Suddenly, a friendly voice chuckled. "Well, hello there, young explorers!" Mr. Henderson, with his kind, crinkly eyes, smiled from beneath his straw hat. "Come on in!"
The children shyly entered the garden. "This is amazing, Mr. Henderson!" Lily exclaimed, her pigtails bouncing. "Why is your garden so full of buzzing things?"
Mr. Henderson knelt beside a patch of lavender. "These are my special helpers," he explained gently. "They're called pollinators. Bees and butterflies are excellent at it!"
He pointed to a bee. "See how it collects nectar for food? While it sips, tiny yellow pollen sticks to its fuzzy legs. Then it carries that pollen to other flowers."
"When pollen moves from one flower to another, it helps the plants make seeds and fruits," Mr. Henderson continued. "That's how we get apples, berries, and even the vegetables we eat!"
"My garden has many different kinds of flowers," he added, gesturing around. "Some are bright for butterflies, some are sweet-smelling for bees. A variety of plants means more food and homes for these helpers!"
Xavier’s eyes widened. He imagined his own backyard, buzzing with life. "Mr. Henderson," he said, "could we make our garden a place for pollinators too?"
Lily immediately pulled out her notebook. "Yes! We can draw plans! We’ll need lots of colorful flowers!" Sam started thinking about what tools they might need.
"That's a wonderful idea!" Mr. Henderson beamed. "A 'Pollinator Paradise' in your own backyard! It will take some work, but it will be worth it."
The next day, the friends went to the library. They found books about local flowers that bees and butterflies loved. Xavier carefully looked at the pictures.
Sam, with his glasses perched on his nose, made a list: sunflower seeds, lavender plants, coneflowers, and a small, shallow dish for water. "Pollinators get thirsty too!" he declared.
