High above the world, where the air was crisp and cool, lived a little cloud named Puffy. He was round and soft, just like a fluffy marshmallow, but Puffy wasn't like the other clouds. He was always looking down, wondering.
"What's down there?" he'd whisper to the big, sleepy clouds. "So many colors! So many tiny things moving!" The big clouds just yawned. "Stay up here, little one," they rumbled, "it's much too busy down there."
But Puffy couldn't stay. His curiosity was like a gentle breeze, pushing him lower and lower. He floated past the tall mountain tops, their snowy caps sparkling, getting closer to the green and brown patchwork below.
"Oh, my!" he gasped, his fluffy edges jiggling with excitement. The world was even more wonderful up close! He saw bright green trees swaying gently and sparkling blue rivers winding like ribbons.
He drifted over a small, quiet garden. It looked a little sad. The tiny green shoots were droopy, and the soil was dry and dusty, waiting for something to bring it to life.
Puffy felt a little tug in his cloudy heart. He wanted to help! But how could a cloud, who only knew how to float, make a difference down here on the ground?
He remembered the big clouds sometimes swelled up, getting heavy, then tiny drops would fall. Could he do that? He tried to puff himself up, getting rounder and rounder, holding his breath.
*Drip! Drip! Drop!* A few tiny raindrops fell from Puffy's bottom. They landed softly on the dry soil. Puffy felt a strange, happy shiver. He was making rain!
He kept dripping, gently watering the whole garden. The little shoots seemed to sigh with relief, slowly lifting their tiny heads towards the sky, drinking in the cool water.
Day after day, Puffy visited the garden. He learned to change his shape, becoming a watering can cloud, then a gentle mist. Soon, bright flowers began to bloom, filling the garden with color!
One sunny morning, Puffy saw a small, brown bird perched on a fence post nearby. Its feathers were dull, and its head was bowed low. It looked very, very sad.
"Hello?" Puffy whispered, drifting closer. The little bird didn't even look up. "What's wrong, little friend?" he asked, his voice soft as a breeze through the leaves.
"The sky is so gray today," chirped the bird, her voice barely a whisper. "I miss the bright colors. I miss the rainbows." She sighed a little, deep birdy sigh, wishing for sunshine.
Puffy remembered the big clouds sometimes held all the colors of the light, waiting for the sun to shine just right. Could he do that too? He wanted to make the bird smile again.
