Penelope was a purple dragon, plump and kind. She lived in a cozy cave high on Mount Cinder.
But Penelope had a secret. Even though she had magnificent wings, she was terribly afraid of heights!
Her best friend, Freddie the firefly, loved to zip and zoom. He glowed with a cheerful yellow light.
"Come on, Penelope!" Freddie would buzz. "Let's fly high above the clouds! It's wonderful up there!"
Penelope would just sigh. "Oh, Freddie, it's too high! My tummy gets all fluttery just thinking about it."
One sunny morning, Freddie zipped past a book. "Look, Penelope! This book talks about how wings work!"
Penelope loved to learn. Her curiosity sparked. "How do they work, Freddie? My wings feel so heavy."
Freddie explained about wind and air, and how wings push against it. "It's called aerodynamics!" he buzzed.
Penelope looked at her own magnificent wings. They were strong, not just heavy. They were made for flying!
She imagined the air lifting her, just like the book showed. Maybe it wouldn't be so scary after all.
Taking a deep breath, Penelope walked to the cave's edge. Freddie zipped circles around her, cheering her on.
She flapped her wings, just a little. *Whoosh!* A gust of wind pushed her gently upward.
"You're doing it!" Freddie chirped, delighted. Penelope giggled. It felt like a giant invisible hand was holding her.
She flapped again, stronger this time. Up, up, up she went, soaring past the cave entrance!
