📖 Read the Story

Omar lived in a city that hummed with a thousand different sounds. Tall buildings touched the sky, and colorful shops lined busy streets. His favorite sound was the laughter of children playing.

Omar loved to watch the world go by from his balcony. He saw people from all over, speaking different languages, wearing beautiful clothes. He noticed small things others might miss.

One sunny afternoon, Omar saw Mrs. Goldstein slowly walking home. Her silver hair shone like moonlight. She carried two very full grocery bags, one in each hand.

Her steps were small and careful. The bags looked heavy, making her shoulders droop a little. Omar could see her frown, just a tiny bit, as she tried to balance them.

Omar's heart felt a little squeeze. He knew he could help! Without thinking twice, he dashed out the door and down the stairs, his bright smile leading the way.

"Mrs. Goldstein!" he called gently. "May I please help you with those bags? They look very heavy!" He stood politely, waiting for her answer.

Mrs. Goldstein blinked, then a warm smile spread across her face. "Why, thank you, dear Omar," she said softly. "That would be a wonderful help."

Omar proudly carried one bag, feeling strong. They walked slowly, side by side, the heavy bags now much lighter. The city sounds seemed a little softer.

"Do you like flowers, Omar?" Mrs. Goldstein asked. "I miss my old garden." Omar's eyes lit up. "I love plants! My Baba taught me about growing tomatoes."

"A garden!" Mrs. Goldstein sighed happily. "Imagine fresh herbs and bright flowers right here." Omar pointed to a dusty, empty lot nearby. "Maybe... we could make one?"

Mrs. Goldstein's eyes twinkled. "A community garden! What a splendid idea!" They imagined rows of green plants and buzzing bees, right in their neighborhood.

Omar and Mrs. Goldstein told everyone. Mr. Lee from the bakery promised old wooden crates. Sofia, a girl with bright braids, offered to help dig.

Soon, many neighbors gathered at the dusty lot. Young and old, from different homes, all ready to help. Omar felt a warm flutter in his chest.

They cleared weeds and moved rocks. Omar and Sofia giggled as they found a wiggly worm. Mrs. Goldstein carefully planned where each seed would go.
