Mei bounced on her cushion, her heart fluttering like a butterfly. The air already hummed with excitement. Soon, the village would celebrate the Lantern Festival, the most dazzling night of the year! Mei loved how the lanterns made everything glow.

Preparations had begun! Mama hummed as she cooked delicious treats, while Papa carefully folded vibrant paper. Nai Nai, Mei’s wise grandmother, painted tiny, perfect flowers onto a special lantern. Everyone had an important job.

Mei watched them, her brow furrowed. Mama, Papa, and Nai Nai were so good at making everything beautiful. She wanted to help make this festival the most dazzling ever, but sometimes she felt a little too small for the big tasks.

“Would you like to help, little sparrow?” Nai Nai asked softly. Mei’s eyes lit up! She carefully glued tiny pieces of red paper onto a lantern, making polka dots. Each dot felt like a spark of her own excitement.

Nai Nai worked on a magnificent lantern shaped like a lotus flower. Its petals glowed with soft, painted colors even before it was lit. Mei leaned closer, mesmerized by the delicate lines and shimmering details. It looked truly magical.

Later, Mei overheard Mama and Nai Nai talking. “...and with this lantern,” Mama whispered, “we’ll help make wishes come true.” Mei’s ears perked up. Wishes come true? She had never heard of such a secret!

Mei couldn't wait. She found Nai Nai tidying the brushes. "Nai Nai," she asked, her voice a little breathless, "what's the secret? The secret about making wishes come true with the lanterns?"

Nai Nai smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Ah, little one," she began, "it's not a magic spell, like in stories. It's something much more special. Something that involves everyone, and a lot of heart."

"Each lantern holds a wish," Nai Nai continued, "but not just *any* wish. It’s about wishing for others, for shared joy. When we make things beautiful together, and wish for happiness for everyone, that's when the magic truly happens."

Mei thought about Nai Nai’s words: "shared joy." She wanted to make a wish for everyone, too! She picked up a fresh piece of paper and began to sketch. Her own special lantern would hold the biggest, happiest wish.

With careful hands, Mei chose bright yellow paper. She cut it into a perfect circle, like a happy moon. Then, she added small, colorful dots and swirls, thinking of all the people she loved. This lantern was for everyone.

Finally, the eve of the festival arrived. The house glowed with dozens of finished lanterns, each a tiny masterpiece. The air buzzed with excitement, a wonderful feeling that made Mei’s tummy tingle with anticipation.

As dusk painted the sky in shades of purple and orange, the family stepped outside. Mama carried the lotus lantern, Papa a dragon, and Nai Nai a delicate bird. Mei carefully held her own round, happy moon lantern.

They joined a gentle stream of families, all carrying their lanterns. The village street, usually quiet, now filled with soft footsteps and happy murmurs. A river of glowing lights began to flow towards the heart of the village.
