Luna loved quiet afternoons. She would draw fantastical creatures or read stories about faraway lands. Sometimes, though, she wished for a special friend, one who understood all her secret thoughts and wild imaginings. A friend just for her.
One sunny Saturday, Luna’s mum announced a surprise. “We’re going to Whimsical Wonders!” she said, her eyes twinkling. Luna’s heart fluttered. It was her favourite shop, filled with soft, cuddly treasures and the scent of new toys.
Inside, the shop was a rainbow of fluff. Bears, bunnies, and fluffy sheep smiled from every shelf. Luna walked slowly, her fingers brushing against silky ears and soft paws. She was looking for something truly special, a friend unlike any other.
She found the Jellycat section. Rows and rows of perfectly plump, pastel-coloured Jellycats sat waiting. Each one had perfectly round eyes and a sweet, symmetrical smile. They looked very proper, almost too perfect, thought Luna.
Then, tucked away behind a pile of fluffy pink pigs, Luna saw him. He wasn’t perfect at all. One ear flopped down, his smile was a little crooked, and his fur was a mix of blues, greens, and a surprising tuft of bright pink.
“He’s perfect!” Luna whispered, carefully picking him up. He was soft, but wonderfully lopsided. His big, shiny button eyes seemed to wink at her. “He’s a bit silly, isn’t he?” her mum chuckled. “That’s why I love him,” Luna declared.
Luna named him Squiggle, because he was wiggly and wonderfully odd. Her mum smiled, understanding. Squiggle wasn't like the other Jellycats, but he was exactly right for Luna. He felt soft and warm in her arms all the way home.
Squiggle quickly found his special spot on Luna’s bed, nestled amongst her patchwork quilt and favourite storybooks. He looked quite at home, his crooked smile seeming to stretch even wider. Luna felt a happy flutter in her chest.
That evening, Luna told Squiggle all about her day. She imagined him nodding, his floppy ear twitching with excitement. Together, they sailed on a pirate ship made of cushions and explored a jungle of blankets. Squiggle was the best listener.
The next day, Luna wanted to show Squiggle to her friends at school. She loved his silliness, his unique charm. But as she walked, a little worry began to tickle her. Would they think he was as special as she did?
At playtime, her friends proudly displayed their own Jellycats. There was a perfectly fluffy pink unicorn, a neat blue bunny, and a sleek grey cat. Each one was perfectly shaped, with neat, even features and soft, uniform fur.
Luna hesitated. Squiggle, with his lopsided grin and mismatched ears, seemed so different. She tucked him a little deeper into her backpack, only letting a tiny bit of his blue-green fur peek out. She felt a small pang of sadness.
That night, Squiggle seemed extra silly. His pink tuft of fur stuck out at a jaunty angle, and his big, surprised eyes stared up at her. Luna loved him, she truly did, but a tiny voice in her head wondered if he was *too* silly.
She wished, just for a moment, that he was a bit more like the other Jellycats. A perfect, symmetrical smile. Ears that stood up straight. Would her friends understand how wonderful he was, even with all his funny quirks?
Luna gently tried to smooth down Squiggle’s floppy ear, but it bounced right back up. She tried to tuck in his bright pink tuft, but it sprang out again, like a cheerful little spring. Squiggle was stubbornly, wonderfully himself.
The next afternoon, Luna took Squiggle to the park. She sat under the big oak tree, watching the ducks paddle in the pond. She still felt a little unsure about her silly friend. He was so special to her, but would others see it?
Suddenly, a little boy toddled over. He pointed a chubby finger at Squiggle. “Look, Mummy!” he giggled, his eyes wide with delight. “A funny Jellycat!” He wasn’t laughing *at* Squiggle, but *with* him. His laugh was pure joy.
