Lucida loved her sparkly red slippers. One was striped, one polka-dotted, both a little too big. "Ready for adventure, Mom?" she chirped, her wild brown curls bouncing. Today, they were visiting Grandma and Grandpa!
Outside, a magnificent flying carriage awaited! It was a giant wicker basket, with rainbow balloons and a puffing, chugging engine. "All aboard for Granny's Gables!" Mom announced with a wink.
Up, up, up they soared! Lucida pressed her nose to the wicker edge, watching the city shrink below. Houses looked like tiny toy blocks. A flock of giggling geese flew past, honking hello.
Lucida wiggled her toes with glee. The wind tickled her feet! Oops! One sparkly red slipper slipped right off her foot! "Oh no!" she gasped, watching it tumble.
Down, down, down it twirled, a tiny red sparkle against the green hills. It vanished behind a distant, rocky cliff. Lucida's heart did a little flip-flop. Her favorite slipper!
Soon, the flying carriage landed with a gentle bump. Grandma and Grandpa hugged Lucida tight. "Welcome, darling!" Grandpa boomed. But Lucida couldn't stop thinking about her lost slipper.
"Mom, my slipper fell out!" Lucida whispered later. Mom patted her head. "Oh dear! We'll look for it tomorrow, sweetie. It's probably having its own adventure!"
But Lucida couldn't wait! Her slipper might be lonely! She tiptoed out the back door, past the rambling rose bushes, and set off towards the distant, green cliff.
"Well, hello there, little explorer!" A booming voice made her jump. It was Uncle Barnaby, with his magnificent, twitching mustache. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
Lucida explained about the runaway slipper. "Aha! A rescue mission!" Uncle Barnaby declared, adjusting his rumpled shirt. "I shall accompany you! My inventing skills might come in handy!"
"Barnaby! The gooseberry jam is bubbling over!" Aunt Petunia's high-pitched voice sliced through the air. "And the chickens are wearing your best hat again!"
Uncle Barnaby sighed dramatically. "Alas, duty calls! The jam, the chickens, the hat... a hero's work is never done! Be careful, Lucida!" He hurried back inside.
Lucida giggled. She continued her journey alone, down a winding path. The tall grass tickled her knees, and butterflies danced around her head. Her slipper was waiting!
Suddenly, a voice piped up from behind a giant thistle. "Hey! What are you doing way out here?" Lucida spun around, startled, nearly tripping over her one remaining slipper.
