Lily was six years old, with eyes as bright as the morning sun. But sometimes, when the evening stars appeared, a quiet wish fluttered in her heart. She missed her mom.
Her mom, Elara, loved the stars most of all. "Look, Lily-bug," she'd whisper, "each one is a tiny, faraway sun, twinkling just for us, like secret diamonds."
When Lily was very little, her mom went to live among those bright, sparkling stars. Now, Lily often looked up, wondering where her mom was, so far away.
The stars on her ceiling glowed, but they felt so distant. Lily wished she could just *be* with her mom, among the real, shimmering lights, feeling her close.
Her dad, Arthur, would hug her tight. "She's always with us, sweet pea," he'd say, "like the starlight that travels across the universe, always present."
One rainy afternoon, searching for a story, Lily found a dusty, old treasure. It was her mom's astronomy book, filled with drawings of the night sky.
Inside were maps of constellations! "Ursa Major," she read slowly, tracing the lines connecting bright dots. "The Great Bear, always watching."
The words were big, and the pictures were tricky. How could a few dots make a bear, or a queen? She sighed, feeling a little lost in the vastness.
Dad saw her. "That was your mom's favorite book," he said softly. "She knew every star. Maybe we can learn together and discover its secrets?"
Every evening, they opened the book. Dad explained how ancient people saw pictures in the stars, like connecting the dots to tell wonderful stories.
"See Orion, the mighty hunter," Dad pointed. "And Cassiopeia, the queen, shaped like a 'W' or 'M' in the sky, always regal."
They learned stars are light-years away. "That means the light we see left the star a very, very long time ago," Dad explained, "traveling just to reach us."
Lily pictured the light traveling, traveling, for years and years, just to reach her eyes. It felt like a secret message, a timeless whisper from afar.
"There's a special place nearby," Dad announced, "where the sky is extra dark. We could go on a star-gazing adventure, just like your mom loved!"
