Lily loved the Whispering Library more than any other place. Its tall, creaky doors felt like gateways to a thousand adventures. Each visit, she felt a special thrill, knowing quiet corners and exciting stories waited on every shelf.
But the library held a secret, whispered among the older children: a ghost lived deep inside, in the forgotten 'Forgotten Tales' section. They said it was terrifying, a wobbly, see-through shape that made books float.
Lily, with her bright blue eyes, wasn't easily scared by whispers. She was curious! One afternoon, she decided to venture past the familiar picture books, towards the back, where the air grew cooler and the shadows longer.
As she tiptoed down a narrow aisle, a book gently slid off a high shelf, landing softly at her feet. No one was there. Lily picked it up, a faint, cool shimmer catching her eye just around the corner, then vanishing.
She peeked around the corner. There, floating near a tall shelf, was a shimmering, translucent form. It was wobbly, like jelly, and faintly outlined with old-fashioned spectacles. It looked spooky, just like the whispers said!
The ghost, Bartholomew, let out a soft, mournful sigh. A nearby stack of books wobbled precariously. He *tried* to look menacing, but mostly he just looked a little sad, and very, very see-through.
Lily didn't scream. Instead, she noticed something odd. The ghost wasn't pushing the books *off* the shelf; it seemed to be trying to push them *back on*, but its wobbly form made it difficult, making more books tumble.
Bartholomew floated closer to a shelf, his translucent hand pointing, almost desperately, at an empty space. He was searching for something. A small, dusty, silver bookmark lay on the floor below.
'Are you looking for a book?' Lily whispered, holding up the bookmark. The ghost nodded, a shimmering ripple passing through his form. He pointed to the empty space again, then to a faded drawing on the bookmark.
The drawing on the bookmark showed a peculiar symbol: a crescent moon with a tiny, sparkling star inside. Lily looked at the empty shelf. There were no books with that symbol there.
Bartholomew drifted towards a nearby table, and with a gentle, unseen force, nudged a quill pen to write in the dust. It formed a single, shaky word: 'Lost.' Then, 'Moon-Star.'
'Lost Moon-Star book?' Lily repeated. 'I can help you find it!' Bartholomew shimmered with what looked like relief. This was not a scary ghost; this was a ghost who needed help.
Lily began to search, carefully examining the spines of books on nearby shelves. Bartholomew floated beside her, a silent, wobbly guide, sometimes nudging a book with his translucent hand, pointing to interesting titles.
They found no book, but behind a loose panel on one shelf, Lily discovered a small, rolled-up parchment. It was a riddle, written in elegant, old-fashioned script, tied with a faded blue ribbon.
