Lily bounced in her chair, her pigtails swinging. Tonight was the night! She was finally playing "99 Night in the Forest," a game her friends raved about. She clicked "Start Adventure!"
Suddenly, Lily was there! The virtual forest was even more amazing than she imagined. The air smelled of pine and damp earth, and the sky glowed with the last hints of sunset.
She arrived at the camp. A cozy campfire flickered, sending dancing shadows across the tents. But something felt wrong. It was too quiet. Where were the other campers?
Lily scanned the tree line. Then she saw him. A magnificent deer, with soft brown fur and large, watchful eyes, stood perfectly still among the shadows, observing her.
The deer didn't run away. Instead, he took a step forward, then gently nudged his head towards a winding path that disappeared into the deeper woods. He seemed to be trying to tell her something important.
Lilyβs heart gave a little thump. The other children! They must be lost. The deer, Fawnus, wanted her to follow him. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay, Fawnus, I'll go!"
Fawnus led the way, his steps silent and graceful. The moonlight, now brighter, painted silver stripes on the forest floor. Lily felt a thrill of adventure, but also a little worry for the lost kids.
Suddenly, Fawnus stopped. He pointed his nose to the ground. Lily shone her flashlight and saw a freshly broken twig and a small, muddy footprint. "A clue!" she whispered, feeling like a real detective.
They continued, Fawnus sniffing the air, his ears swiveling to catch every sound. Lily listened too, straining to hear anything unusual. A faint rustle, a distant snap. The forest was full of whispers.
Then, tangled on a thorny bush, Lily spotted a flash of color! It was a bright orange hoodie. "Leo!" she exclaimed, recognizing her friend's favorite top. He must have been here.
Fawnus led her to a magical patch of glowing mushrooms. "Wow!" Lily breathed. "They're called Foxfire," she remembered from a book. "They're harmless and light up the dark!"
A tiny whimper reached her ears. Lily shone her flashlight behind a giant oak tree. There was Mia, curled up, her eyes wide. "Mia!" Lily said softly, offering a comforting smile.
Mia hugged Lily tightly. "I saw a shadow monster!" she whispered, pointing to a gnarled, twisting branch. Lily understood. In the dark, a simple branch could look very scary.
Mia remembered Leo saying he was going to find "sparkly rocks" near the stream. He loved collecting shiny things. Lily knew they had to find him quickly.
