Lily hummed a happy tune. It was Christmas Eve Eve, just one more sleep until the big day! Her house sparkled with fairy lights and the scent of pine needles filled the air. She bounced with excitement, imagining all the wonderful presents.
Suddenly, a small, plain brown package caught her eye. It sat quietly on the doorstep, tucked beside a frosty wreath. It wasn't wrapped in shiny paper or tied with a fancy bow. Who could it be from?
Lily carefully picked it up. There was no name, no tag, no clue at all! It certainly wasn't from Santa; his presents were always under the tree. This was a mystery, a present that appeared a day too early.
With great care, Lily untied the green string and peeled back the brown paper. Inside, nestled on a bed of soft cotton, was a single, dark, smooth seed. Next to it, a tiny, folded note awaited her.
She unfolded the note gently. In neat, looping handwriting, it read: "Plant me, care for me, watch me grow. A Christmas wish, you'll surely know." Lily reread the words, her curiosity growing bigger than ever.
A seed? What kind of seed was this? Would it grow into a giant beanstalk, or perhaps a tree that bore candy canes? Her imagination soared, picturing all sorts of magical plants.
Lily remembered her science lesson. "Plants need three things to grow," her teacher had said. "Good soil, enough water, and plenty of sunshine!" She knew just what to do.
She found a small, empty terracotta pot in the shed and filled it with fresh, dark potting soil. It felt soft and crumbly between her fingers. This was the perfect cozy bed for her mysterious seed.
Very gently, Lily made a tiny hole in the center of the soil. She placed the dark seed inside, then carefully covered it, patting the earth softly. "Grow well, little seed," she whispered.
Next, she fetched her miniature watering can and gave the soil a gentle sprinkle. Just enough to make it damp, not soggy. Then, she placed the pot on the sunniest windowsill in the living room.
Lily waited. And waited. She checked the pot every five minutes. Nothing. Not even a tiny bump in the soil. Growing was much slower than she thought it would be!
She sighed. "Maybe it needs a little encouragement," she thought. She remembered how her mother sang to her house plants. So, Lily decided to try it too.
She sang a soft, sweet carol about Christmas wishes and growing strong. Plants take time, she knew. Just like waiting for Christmas, good things often need patience to arrive.
Later that afternoon, as the sun began to set, Lily checked one last time. Her eyes widened! A tiny, green sprout had pushed its way through the soil, reaching for the light.
