Leo adjusted his wizard hat in the mirror. It was Halloween night! He was supposed to be a brave sorcerer, but his tummy felt fluttery. Outside, he could hear happy shouts and laughter. He clutched his treat bag, a plain canvas sack. It felt very empty.
"Are you ready, my little wizard?" his mom asked, smiling. She knelt down, adjusting his robe. Leo nodded, but his smile was small. He loved stories of magic, but going out into the dark, even for candy, felt like a very big adventure.
His dad gave him a gentle pat on the shoulder. "Remember, brave wizards always face new paths. We’ll be right here when you return." Leo took a deep breath. He imagined his favorite storybook hero, Sir Reginald, setting off on a quest.
Stepping onto the porch, Leo saw other children. A roaring tiger, a sparkly fairy, a speedy superhero – they all looked so confident! Leo felt a little bit like his wizard hat was too big, and his wand just a plain stick. He walked slowly down the path.
The streetlights cast long, dancing shadows. Jack-o'-lanterns glowed from every window. It was beautiful, but also a little bit spooky. Leo hugged his treat bag closer. He wished he had a magical spell to make him feel braver.
He was about to turn back when something caught his eye. Under a giant oak tree, near a pile of fallen leaves, was a small, green shimmer. It looked like a tiny, glowing moss ball. Was it a decoration? Or something else entirely?
Curiosity nudged Leo forward. He tiptoed closer, his wizard wand held ready, just in case. The green shimmer moved! It was a small, fuzzy creature, round and soft, with two huge, golden eyes that blinked slowly.
The creature didn't look scary at all. In fact, it looked rather shy, like Leo. It let out a soft, sweet "chirp," then nudged a bright red leaf with its tiny, invisible nose. Its leaf-like ears twitched, listening.
Leo knelt down. "Hello?" he whispered. The creature chirped again, a happy sound this time. It seemed to understand him. It gently bumped its head against Leo’s outstretched hand, its fur surprisingly soft.
"Are you... a Halloween helper?" Leo asked. The creature trilled, a sound like tiny bells. It seemed to be inviting him to follow. It bounced a little, its whole fuzzy body jiggling with excitement.
Leo had never met a creature like this before. He felt a fizz of excitement, pushing away his shyness. "Okay," he decided. "You can come trick-or-treating with me." He carefully picked up the creature. It was surprisingly light.
He named his new friend Pip. With Pip tucked safely in his arms, Leo felt a little taller, a little braver. Pip seemed to hum a soft tune, a comforting vibration against Leo's chest. This Halloween was already full of surprises.
They approached the first house. Leo usually mumbled "Trick-or-treat," but with Pip, he spoke clearly. "Trick-or-treat!" he announced. The lady who opened the door blinked at Pip, then smiled warmly.
"Well, what a delightful little helper you have!" she chuckled, dropping candy into Leo's bag. Pip let out a happy chirp. It seemed to love the bright lights and friendly faces. Leo felt a warmth spread through him.
They visited several more houses. Each time, people were charmed by Pip. Leo found himself talking more, explaining that Pip was his "magical assistant." He wasn’t shy at all anymore. He was having so much fun!
Then, Pip began to vibrate with excitement. Its green fur glowed a little brighter. It gently nudged Leo towards a small, charming cottage. This house had the most amazing decorations: dozens of twinkling lights and glowing pumpkins.
A sweet, faint scent of cinnamon and apples drifted from the cottage. Pip trilled excitedly, its little ears twitching rapidly. It seemed to know this place. Leo felt a tingle of magic in the air.
