Kiri loved Halloween! Her favourite book showed pumpkins, black cats, and chilly autumn nights. She imagined crisp leaves crunching underfoot, and spooky, friendly ghosts. Tonight was the night! She could barely wait for the magic to begin.
Kiri dreamt of a Halloween full of mysterious shadows and cool breezes. She pictured herself wrapped in a warm cloak, carrying a flickering lantern through a misty garden. It would be perfectly spooky, yet wonderfully fun.
But when Kiri woke up, the sun streamed through her window. Outside, the pohutukawa tree was bursting with red flowers. Bees buzzed lazily among the lavender, and a fantail flitted past. It was a beautiful, warm New Zealand spring day.
Kiri sighed. Her sparkly witch hat felt silly in the sunshine. How could she have a truly magical Halloween when everything was so bright and warm? It wasn't like the stories at all. She felt a tiny flutter of disappointment.
"Don't worry, sweetie," Mum said, giving Kiri a hug. "New Zealand Halloween is special! We can still have lots of fun. Maybe even more fun, because we don't need big coats!" Mum smiled warmly.
Together, they started decorating. Instead of dry leaves, they used fresh fern fronds. They strung fairy lights amongst blooming jasmine. Kiri even found some shiny shells to add to the spooky-but-sunny display.
The house looked pretty, but Kiri still felt a little lost. She wanted *real* Halloween magic, the kind that made your tummy tingle with wonder. She wished for something truly enchanting, something uniquely hers.
Kiri wandered into the garden, her witch hat askew. A friendly fantail landed on a branch nearby, tilting its head. "Hello, fantail," Kiri whispered. "Do you know where the magic is hiding?"
She looked around. The garden wasn't spooky, but it was alive! Bright orange monarch butterflies fluttered past. Tiny, iridescent beetles scurried under leaves. The air smelled sweet from the flowers.
Kiri watched the bees dance from flower to flower, collecting nectar. She saw a tiny snail leaving a silvery trail on a damp leaf. Maybe magic wasn't just about shadows and ghosts. Maybe it was everywhere, in plain sight.
A new idea sparked in Kiri's mind. She didn't need to pretend it was cold and misty. She could find her *own* kind of magic, a New Zealand Halloween magic. Her eyes brightened with determination.
Kiri carefully gathered fallen pohutukawa petals, soft green moss, and a shiny, smooth pebble. She arranged them in a small, hollowed-out log. "A magic spell for a New Zealand night," she murmured.
As the sun began to dip below the hills, painting the sky in fiery oranges and soft purples, Kiri felt a new kind of excitement. The air grew cooler, but still gentle. The garden began to transform.
Kiri put on her witch hat again, this time with a confident smile. She added a sprig of jasmine to her hair. Tonight, she wasn't just a witch; she was a New Zealand garden witch, ready for adventure.
