Kendall Shaw, a girl with bright eyes and braided hair, loved spending sunny mornings in her backyard. It was her favorite place to explore.

Today, a tiny flutter caught her eye under the big oak tree. It wasn't a leaf, and it certainly wasn't a butterfly.

There, huddled in the grass, was a baby bird! It was small and fluffy, mostly grayish-brown, and looked a little lost and very alone.

But what made it special was a single, tiny feather on its wing. It shimmered with all the colors of a rainbow, like a little jewel.

Kendall knew not to touch baby birds unless they were truly in trouble. She watched quietly, staying perfectly still, hoping a parent would appear.

The little bird peeped softly, a tiny, worried sound. No parent bird swooped down. It seemed truly alone, a fledgling too young to fly far.

"You must be lost," Kendall whispered. She decided to help the little starling find its way home. She named him Sparkle.

She remembered her grandmother saying starlings often nested in tree holes or birdhouses. "We need to look up," she thought.

Starlings eat insects, berries, and seeds. Kendall knew their parents would be looking for tasty treats to feed their hungry chick.

Kendall carefully placed Sparkle into her small canvas backpack, leaving the top open so he could breathe and see the sky.

She walked slowly, listening intently. Starlings make many different sounds, sometimes even mimicking other birds! She hoped to hear a familiar call.

She checked the birdhouse near the rose bushes. Empty. Then the old apple tree. No starling nest there either.

Suddenly, a loud, chattering call echoed from the tall pine tree at the edge of the yard. It sounded exactly like a starling!

She tiptoed closer, Sparkle peeking nervously from her bag. High in the pine, two adult starlings darted in and out of a small hole.
