Karen bounced on her bed, a huge smile on her face. Tonight was her very first sleepover! She had planned everything, from games to yummy treats. Her heart thumped with excitement, ready for the fun to begin.
"First, spooky stories under my blanket fort," she whispered to her favorite teddy bear. "Then, a midnight raid on the fridge! And of course, baking the best chocolate chip cookies ever!"
Ding-dong! Her friends arrived, giggling. Nancy, Maya, and Sam burst in, carrying their sleeping bags. "Sleepover time!" Nancy cheered, her red hair bouncing with every happy jump.
Soon, a cozy blanket fort stood tall in the living room. Flashlights flickered as they huddled inside. "Who wants to hear about the Giggling Ghost who loved to tickle toes?" Maya whispered, making everyone shiver delightfully.
After spooky tales, it was cookie time! Karen carefully laid out flour, sugar, and a big bag of chocolate chips. "We need to mix these just right to make them perfect," she announced, feeling like a real chef.
Everyone helped. Sam stirred the sugar, Maya cracked eggs with great care. Nancy reached for the chocolate chips, adding a very big handful. "More chocolate makes them extra delicious!" she declared.
"Nancy, that's too many chips!" Karen frowned. "We need some for the next batch, and for the fridge raid!" Nancy rolled her eyes. "You're always so bossy, Karen! I want to raid the fridge now!"
Karen felt a hot flush spread across her cheeks. "No, we finish the cookies first!" she snapped. Nancy stomped her foot. "Fine! I don't want to play with you if you're going to be so mean!"
Nancy grabbed her sleeping bag and went to sit alone. Karen felt a tight knot in her tummy. Her first sleepover was ruined! She glared at Nancy, feeling very cross and disappointed.
Later, Karen made a decision. "I don't want Nancy at my sleepover anymore," she told her mom, her voice firm. "She's not being a good friend." Her mom listened, then nodded slowly, understanding Karen's feelings.
The next day at school, a new girl arrived. Her name was Lily. She had quiet eyes and sat alone, reading a book about magical creatures. Karen watched her from across the room, feeling a little curious.
"Mom," Karen said that evening, "maybe Lily could come to my sleepover instead of Nancy?" Her mom smiled gently. "That's a kind thought, Karen. It's good to include new friends. Let's ask her."
Lily arrived, holding a small backpack tight. She smiled shyly, her dark eyes wide. "Hi, Karen," she whispered softly. Karen tried her best to make Lily feel welcome, but Lily seemed very quiet.
They played games and told more stories. Maya and Sam giggled loudly, having a wonderful time. But Lily just sat on the edge of the blanket fort, watching. She didn't join in the fun.
