Jacob was a boy with a secret. He had warm brown hair that always looked a little windswept, and bright, curious eyes that noticed everything. Sometimes, he felt a special tingle.
This tingle meant it was time for his secret job. He wasn't a superhero who could fly or lift cars. Jacob was "The Light-Bringer," and his superpower was spreading warmth and comfort.
He felt a tiny shiver today, a small tug deep inside his chest. It was a feeling he knew well. Someone, somewhere, needed a little extra light.
He looked out his window. The sun was shining, but the day still felt a bit muted, a little grey around the edges. Not quite bright enough, he thought.
Then he saw Lily. She sat alone on the big park bench, her shoulders slumped, her dark pigtails hanging low. Her bright pink jacket seemed to lose its color.
Jacob knew that heavy, quiet feeling. He remembered when his favorite fuzzy dinosaur, Rex, went missing last summer. It had made his tummy feel all wobbly.
He decided it was time to be Jacob the Light-Bringer. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his special, smooth, grey Sparkle Stone, holding it tight.
He walked carefully towards Lily, his steps soft on the pavement. "Are you okay, Lily?" he asked gently, his voice just a whisper.
Lily looked up, her eyes watery. "My kitten, Mittens, is gone!" she cried. "I can't find her anywhere. She just disappeared!"
Jacob felt the Sparkle Stone warm in his hand, a little pulse of energy. He closed his eyes and pictured Mittens, small and soft, needing comfort.
He opened his eyes. A tiny, almost invisible, shimmering path seemed to appear in his mind, leading towards the thick green bushes at the edge of the park.
"Come on, Lily," he said, a new confidence in his voice. "I think I know where to look." He pointed towards Mr. Henderson's quiet, slightly overgrown garden.
Mr. Henderson's garden was usually very quiet. He liked his peace and quiet, and sometimes his frown made people think he was grumpy.
But Jacob saw a flash of fluffy grey near a big rose bush. He felt a stronger warmth from his Sparkle Stone, a definite pull.
