📖 Read the Story
Hazel the hedgehog lived in Whispering Woods. Her quills were perpetually tangled, a soft, messy crown.
This summer, the woods were terribly hot. The sun beat down, making leaves curl and crackle.
Hazel felt prickly all over, not just from her quills! She longed for a cool, shady spot.
One evening, a little firefly named Flicker zipped by. He glowed with a happy, golden light.
Flicker loved to dance in the twilight, his light blinking like a tiny star. He was a bit clumsy.
"Oops!" chirped Flicker, as he bumped right into Hazel. His light flickered brightly.
A tiny spark flew! Hazel felt a sudden, hot sting. "Ouch!" she cried, jumping back.
A few of her messy quills were singed, curled and black at the tips. Hazel was furious!
Hazel huffing, facing Flicker who looks very small and scared, his light dimming. Her nose is twitching angrily.
"Oh, Hazel, I'm so, so sorry!" Flicker whispered, his light dimming with sadness.
Hazel looked from her singed quills to the dry, brittle leaves on the forest floor, then to a parched stream bed.
Suddenly, her anger faded. This heat was dangerous. A tiny spark could cause big trouble.
"Flicker," Hazel said, "we need to warn everyone. This dry forest is not safe for sparks."
Flicker's light brightened. "Together?" he asked. Hazel nodded. "Together."
