Eva carefully packed her favorite book. Today was a very big day! She was moving to a new town, to a new house, and a brand new school. A little flutter danced in her tummy.
Her new house had a big, sunny window. Eva loved watching the birds sing their morning songs. She couldn't hear their melodies, but she could see their happy chirps and fluttering wings.
On Monday morning, Eva walked into her new classroom. It was bright and colorful, filled with new faces. Everyone was talking, laughing, and playing together.
Eva wanted to say hello, to join in the fun. She waved her hand and smiled. But when she tried to speak with her hands, no one understood. Their faces looked puzzled.
A quiet sadness settled over Eva. She sat alone at a table, watching the other children. Their words were like secret whispers she couldn't share, even though she wanted to.
Ben sat across the room, drawing a spaceship. He was a shy boy with sandy blonde hair and round glasses. He noticed Eva’s hands. They moved like little dancers, telling a story without sound.
During playtime, Eva went to the swings. She loved to soar high, feeling the wind in her hair and the sunshine on her face. Ben watched from the edge of the playground, still curious.
One day, Eva drew a picture of a big, red apple. She held it up, smiling. Ben, who loved drawing too, slowly walked closer to see her artwork.
Eva pointed to the apple, then made a sign with her hand. It looked like she was taking a bite! Ben's eyes widened. He understood! A small spark of connection.
Ben pointed to the apple, then to Eva, and then to himself. He wanted to know if she liked apples. Eva nodded happily, her smile bright again, a warm feeling spreading.
Every day after that, Ben would watch Eva's hands. He saw her sign "book" when she read, and "play" when she wanted to go outside. He wanted to learn more of her secret language.
During quiet time, Ben sat next to Eva. He pointed to his ear, then shook his head. Eva understood. She gently took his hand and showed him the sign for "hello."
Ben practiced "hello" over and over. His fingers felt clumsy at first, but Eva was patient and encouraging. Soon, he could sign it perfectly! They both giggled.
Their friendship blossomed like a sunflower reaching for the sun. They shared secrets with their hands, played games, and read stories together. Ben was no longer shy around Eva.
