Ella lived in a grand old house, but her favorite spot was a warm corner by the kitchen hearth. She had kind, brown eyes and a gentle smile, even when her day was full of chores.

Her stepmother, Lady Seraphina, was tall and stern, with sharp eyes. Her stepsisters, Prunella and Griselda, were loud and always wanted their own way. They made Ella work from dawn till dusk.

Ella swept the floors, scrubbed the pots, and dusted every nook. Her hands were often smudged, but she hummed soft tunes. She found joy in making things sparkle, even when no one noticed.

One sunny morning, a royal messenger arrived! He carried an invitation to a grand ball at the palace. Prunella and Griselda shrieked with delight, dreaming of dancing with the handsome Prince.

For days, the house buzzed with preparations. Ella helped her stepsisters choose ribbons and lace, and polish their shiny shoes. "You must look your best!" she told them, a little sigh escaping her lips.

Finally, the carriage rumbled away, carrying her step-family to the ball. Ella sat alone by the cold hearth, her heart heavy. A single tear traced a path down her cheek. "Oh, if only..." she whispered.

Suddenly, a soft light filled the kitchen! A kind, plump woman with sparkling eyes and a gown of starlight appeared. She carried a delicate, glowing wand. "Why, my dear," she said gently, "why the tears?"

"You shall go to the ball!" declared the Fairy Godmother. With a wave of her wand, a pumpkin became a magnificent golden carriage. Four little mice transformed into prancing white horses.

Then, with another flick, Ella's worn dress shimmered into a gown of silver moonlight, sparkling with tiny stars. On her feet, two delicate glass slippers appeared, clear as crystal. Ella gasped in wonder.

"But remember, my dear," warned the Fairy Godmother, "this magic only lasts until midnight. When the clock strikes twelve, all will return to how it was. You must leave before then!"

Ella arrived at the palace. All eyes turned to her as she stepped from the carriage. The music swelled. Even the handsome Prince, who had looked rather bored, noticed her immediately and offered his hand.

They danced every dance, twirling across the polished floor. The Prince looked into Ella's kind eyes, feeling a warmth he hadn't known before. Ella felt lighter than air, her heart filled with pure joy.

Suddenly, the clock began to chime. DONG! DONG! DONG! Ella remembered the warning! She whispered a hurried goodbye to the surprised Prince and rushed away, down the grand staircase.

DONG! DONG! DONG! As she hurried, one of her delicate glass slippers slipped from her foot. It clattered on the marble stairs. But Ella couldn't stop. She had to reach the carriage before the last chime!
