Carlos loved the jungle more than anything. Every morning, after breakfast, he'd grab his worn canvas backpack and sneak out, ready for a new adventure. The vibrant green called to him.
He knew all the secret paths and hidden streams. He knew which plants had sweet berries and which towering trees were home to chattering monkeys and colorful toucans.
His dad, Dr. Mateo, was a kind veterinarian. From him, Carlos learned about every creature, big or small, and how to care for them with gentle hands and a loving heart.
One sunny afternoon, Carlos ventured deeper than usual. The air hummed with unseen life, and giant, fragrant flowers bloomed in every shade of the rainbow.
Suddenly, a quiet whimper broke the jungle's symphony. Not a monkey, not a jaguar, but something small and distressed. Carlos stopped, his heart thumping softly. He followed the sound.
Hidden beneath a giant fern, he saw it. A magnificent bird, its emerald feathers dulled, one wing bent at an odd angle. It was a rare, beautiful Quetzal!
"Hello, little one," Carlos whispered, moving slowly and softly. He remembered his dad's words: "Always be calm, gentle, and slow when approaching an injured animal."
He saw a small, clean cut on its wing. It wasn't bleeding much, but the wing was definitely hurt. The beautiful bird shivered slightly, its dark eyes wide with fear.
Carlos remembered his dad showing him how to clean a wound with a special plant. He also knew how to make a soft, safe place for an injured animal to rest.
Carefully, Carlos gathered soft moss and broad, sheltering leaves. He found a specific plant his dad called "Healing Leaf" and gently crushed its cool, green pulp.
He gently scooped the fragile bird into his backpack, making sure it was comfortable and secure. The Quetzal was surprisingly light, a tiny bundle of precious life.
Back home, Carlos set up a cozy spot in his sunlit room. A soft blanket, fresh water, and tiny pieces of sweet fruit. His dad watched, smiling proudly.
Every day, Carlos checked the bird's wing, just like his dad taught him. He changed its water, offered different fruits, and spoke in soft, encouraging tones.
Slowly, the Quetzal grew stronger. It began to preen its iridescent feathers, and its bright, intelligent eyes followed Carlos around the room, less afraid now.
