Blaze, a bright red dragon with a perpetually singed tail, puffed out his chest. "Watch this, Elder Ember!" he roared, then took a deep breath. A shaky, sputtering flame burst from his nostrils, barely singeing the marshmallow he held on a stick. It was supposed to be a perfect roast, not a slightly toasted lump!
Elder Ember, a wise old fire dragon with spectacles perched on his snout, sighed dramatically. "Blaze, my boy," he rumbled, pushing up his glasses. "A true fire dragon's flame is a steady, magnificent inferno! Not... a startled sneeze." Blaze drooped, a smudge of soot appearing on his nose.
Blaze loved being a fire dragon. He loved the warmth of his cave, the smell of smoke, and the thrill of a good, hearty blaze. He just wished his fire-breathing was a little less… unpredictable. He often told fiery jokes, like, "Why did the dragon cross the road? To get to the other *siiiide*!"
One sunny morning, Blaze was practicing near a bubbling stream. He held another marshmallow, determined. "Steady… aim… FWOOSH!" he bellowed. But instead of fire, a surprising gush of water shot from his mouth, dousing the marshmallow and creating a tiny, soggy explosion.
Blaze stared, bewildered. His beautiful marshmallow was now a sad, wet blob. "What in the Dragon Peaks was THAT?" he spluttered, shaking his head. He blamed it on a "sneaky burp" or "too much stream water." Elder Ember, watching from afar, scratched his chin, looking puzzled.
Later, Blaze tried again, further from the stream. He focused, imagining the hottest flame. "ROAR!" he tried. This time, a tiny, perfectly formed ice cube popped out, landing with a *plink* in a puddle. Blaze gasped. "Am I… broken?" he whispered, horrified.
The next day, Blaze was playing hide-and-seek with Rocky, the gentle earth dragon. Rocky, a mosaic of brown and green scales, was surprisingly good at blending in. "Ready or not, here I come!" Blaze called, peering behind a large boulder.
Blaze decided to try a new hiding spot. He attempted to dig a small burrow for himself, wiggling his snout into the soft earth. He pushed and pushed, but instead of a hole, a small patch of vibrant, purple flowers suddenly *sprouted* where he was digging!
Rocky, lumbering over, spotted the flowers. "Oh! Pretty!" he rumbled, sniffing them happily. Blaze quickly covered the blooming patch with his tail. "Uh, yes! I… uh… planted them earlier! For *camouflage*!" Rocky nodded slowly, completely believing him. Blaze just felt more confused.
A light drizzle began to fall while Blaze was practicing his flying. He hated getting his scales wet! "Grrr!" he growled, frustrated, as a drop landed right on his nose. He let out a loud, annoyed roar, flapping his wings furiously.
Suddenly, a bright, crackling lightning bolt zipped from his tail, striking a nearby, unsuspecting tree with a *CRACK-ZAP!* The tree smoked gently. Sparkle, the electric blue lightning dragon, who was zipping by, stopped mid-air, eyes wide.
"WHOA! Blaze! You're a lightning dragon too?" Sparkle shrieked, buzzing with excitement. "That was AWESOME! Do it again!" Blaze just whimpered, his scales feeling prickly. He wasn't awesome; he was a walking, talking, elemental disaster!
Blaze, feeling utterly bewildered, confided in his friends. "I'm not just a fire dragon anymore," he mumbled, poking a twig with his snout. "I'm a water-spouting, flower-growing, lightning-zapping… mess!" River, the calm water dragon, listened patiently.
"Perhaps you are not a mess, Blaze," River murmured, her voice like a gentle stream. "Perhaps you are… more." Sparkle zipped around, crackling. "Yeah! You're like, a super-dragon! Can you make a rainbow? Or a mud pie that zaps?"
Rocky, ever practical, offered, "Maybe you just need to practice all of them? Like digging, but with… water?" Blaze shuddered. "I just want to breathe fire properly!" he wailed. His friends exchanged worried glances.
The group decided to bring Blaze's strange occurrences to Elder Ember. "He shot water, Elder!" Sparkle buzzed. "And flowers!" Rocky added, holding up a wilting purple bloom. "And lightning!" River finished softly.
Elder Ember peered over his spectacles. "Nonsense! Blaze is a fire dragon. He's just… particularly clumsy." He looked at Blaze. "Show them, my boy. A proper, fiery blast!" Blaze gulped, feeling the pressure.
