Benny the beaver loved to build. He was building a big, strong dam. Splash! Clunk! What fun!
His dam grew bigger each day. But oh dear, his stick pile was small. He needed many more sticks.
Benny looked left. Benny looked right. No more sticks were nearby. Where could he find them?
Up in the oak tree, squirrels chattered. They had piles and piles of sticks! Benny hoped they would share.
“Hello, Squeaky! Hello, Nutkin!” Benny called. “May I please have some sticks?” He wagged his big tail.
Squeaky puffed his cheeks. Nutkin shook his head. “These are OUR sticks!” they chirped. “All for us, not for you!”
Benny felt a little droopy. His dam needed sticks to be strong. What could he do now?
Just then, Roxy the raccoon scampered by. “What’s wrong, Benny?” she asked kindly. Her eyes twinkled brightly.
Benny showed her his empty stick pile. He pointed to the far side of the river. “So many sticks over there!” he sighed.
Roxy thought and thought. “Aha!” she grinned. “We can build a way to cross!” “A simple bridge!”
