📖 Read the Story

Barnaby, a shaggy golden dog with warm brown eyes and floppy ears, loved his family more than anything. Most of all, he loved tiny Lily, who gurgled and giggled in her soft yellow onesie. Barnaby always stayed close, a soft, furry shadow.

One sunny morning, the house was full of happy sounds. Mom hummed as she watered her favorite plants, and Dad fixed a wobbly kitchen chair. Lily, ever curious, explored the living room rug, her little hands patting the floor.

Barnaby watched Lily crawl towards the open back door. Her little hands patted the wooden floor, her eyes wide with wonder at the bright light. He knew she loved the fresh air and the green garden beyond, but he felt a tiny flutter of worry.

Out she went, into the soft, cool grass. Barnaby padded softly behind her, his tail giving a gentle swish, just enough to show he was happy, but also careful. The garden was a big, exciting place for a tiny baby, full of new smells and sights.

Suddenly, a fluffy-tailed squirrel darted up the ancient oak tree at the edge of the garden. Lily’s eyes followed it, her little arms reaching towards the chattering creature. "Gah-gah!" she cooed, delighted by the quick, bushy tail.

Before Barnaby could nudge her away, Lily, surprisingly quick for her size, pulled herself up onto a gnarled root. Then, with a wiggle and a stretch, she was on the lowest, widest branch of the old oak. It wasn't very high, but it was high for Lily!

Barnaby’s heart gave a little thump. Lily was safe on the branch, giggling at the squirrel, which had scampered a bit higher. But it was too high for her to climb down by herself, and too high for him to reach her with his nose.

He barked, a soft, worried woof. No one heard. He barked again, louder, looking towards the house, hoping Mom or Dad would hear his urgent call. But the sounds of their busy morning covered his barks.

Lily’s giggles quickly turned into a little whimper. The squirrel had scampered far away, and now she just wanted to be down. The branch felt very big and very lonely. Her lower lip began to tremble, and a tear welled in her eye.

Barnaby felt a warm, brave feeling spread through his big, furry chest. He couldn't let his tiny Lily be scared or sad. He had to help her, somehow. He was her protector, her best friend, and he had to be brave.

His big brown eyes scanned the garden, searching for an idea. What could he do? Then, he saw it – a bright red ball, Lily's favorite, resting near the swing set.

He nudged the ball with his nose, pushing it carefully across the grass. Then, he gently picked it up in his mouth. It was a little squishy, perfect for holding, and perfect for the plan that was forming in his clever doggy mind.

Barnaby trotted back to the oak tree, holding the red ball gently. Lily looked down at him, her eyes still a little watery, but a flicker of curiosity appeared. "Doggie?" she mumbled, recognizing her friend and her favorite toy.

He nudged the ball against the rough bark of the tree trunk, just below Lily's dangling feet. Then, he gave a soft push with his nose. The ball bounced a little, then rested perfectly against the dark, textured bark.
