Barnaby Bear snuggled deep into his mossy bed. Mama Bear had tucked him in tight, kissed his forehead, and whispered, "Sweet dreams, my little cub." But Barnaby's eyes, bright and curious, were wide open. He wasn't sleepy. Not one bit!
His cozy den, carved into the hillside, felt warm and safe. But his mind felt wide awake, buzzing like a busy bee. He wiggled his toes, then his little black nose. He counted the glow-worms twinkling on his ceiling. One, two, three… he lost count.
Barnaby sighed a little bear sigh. He just couldn't settle down. He felt a tiny bit restless, like a spring waiting to bounce. "Perhaps," he thought, his soft, round ears twitching, "a very short, very slow walk might help."
Carefully, Barnaby slipped out of bed. He wore his favorite pajamas: soft blue and white stripes, a bit long in the sleeves. They made him feel extra cuddly. The moonlight peeked through his window, painting silver stripes on the floor.
The forest outside was quiet, hushed. Barnaby tiptoed to the door, his soft paw pads making no sound. He pushed it open just a crack. A cool, gentle breeze kissed his nose. The air smelled of damp earth and pine needles.
Barnaby stepped out, closing the door softly behind him. He began his very short, very slow walk, his striped pajamas a cozy hug. Under the old, gnarled oak tree, he saw a familiar shape. It was Oliver Owl.
Oliver, a large, wise-looking owl with speckled brown and grey feathers, was perched on a low branch. His big, golden eyes were half-closed, and his feathers were fluffed up, making him look round and soft. A tiny, slightly askew nightcap sat on his head.
Oliver blinked slowly. "Hoo-hoo, Barnaby," he hooted softly, his voice a sleepy rumble. "Out for a stroll, little one? The forest is settling down for slumber." He yawned a wide, silent owl yawn, then tucked his head under his wing.
A wave of quiet calm seemed to float from Oliver. Barnaby felt a tiny flutter of tiredness behind his own eyes. He waved goodbye and continued his slow walk. Further along the path, near the sturdy pine tree, he spotted Pip Squirrel.
Pip, a small, energetic squirrel with a bushy, reddish-brown tail, was usually a blur of activity. But tonight, he was moving slowly, carefully arranging a pile of acorns in his high nest. His bushy tail drooped a little.
"Evening, Pip!" Barnaby whispered. Pip looked up, his cheeks still plump with a last acorn. "Oh, Barnaby," he chittered, his voice muffled. "Just one more nut for my cozy bed. Then it's time for dreams of crunchy treats."
Pip yawned, a tiny, stretching yawn, and pulled a soft leaf blanket over his acorn stash. He looked so snug. Barnaby felt his own eyelids grow a little heavier. He wished he had a crunchy treat to dream about.
Barnaby wandered past the tangled roots of an old maple. There, curled up near his den entrance, was Flicker Fox. Flicker, a sleek, rusty-red fox, known for his playful pounces, was completely still, his fur glowing softly in the moonlight.
Flicker's long, fluffy tail was wrapped around him like a blanket. He let out a soft, sleepy sigh. Barnaby watched as Flicker's nose twitched once, then settled. He looked utterly content, dreaming foxy dreams.
A warmth spread through Barnaby as he watched Flicker. It felt like a soft, invisible blanket. His own steps grew even slower, his paws dragging just a little. The forest's quiet hum was starting to sound like a lullaby.
Under a thick bush, Barnaby saw a cozy sight. Rosie Rabbit, a soft, grey-brown mama rabbit, was snuggled with her little bunnies. They were all a soft pile of fur, twitching their noses in their sleep. Their tiny ears lay flat.
Rosie opened one eye, saw Barnaby, and gave a gentle, sleepy blink. She nudged her littlest bunny closer. A feeling of deep peace radiated from their snug burrow. It was a picture of perfect, quiet rest.
