📖 Read the Story

Astrid lived in a cozy longhouse by the sea, in a village tucked between tall, green fjords. She was a brave Viking girl, with hair like spun sunshine.

Her best friend was Pip, a fluffy puffin with a cheerful orange beak. Pip loved to waddle after Astrid, making happy little squawks.

They shared secrets and snacks, especially tasty fish caught from the cold, clear waters. Astrid loved Pip more than anything.

But Astrid had a secret fear. The vast, deep ocean, which gave her village so much, also made her heart tremble.

She remembered a long-ago voyage, when a wild storm had tossed their small boat like a toy. The roaring waves still echoed in her dreams.

One blustery morning, a fierce wind swept down from the mountains. It whistled past the longhouses and whipped the sea into whitecaps.

Pip, chasing a shiny shell, was caught by a mighty gust! 'Pip!' cried Astrid, watching her friend carried far out over the churning waves.

Her heart sank like a stone. The sea looked so big and scary. How could she ever find her little puffin in such a wild place?

Fear squeezed her throat, but then she thought of Pip, alone and afraid. *He needs me,* she thought, *my little friend needs me!*

Taking a deep breath, Astrid marched to the dock. 'I must go!' she whispered, her voice firm. There was no other choice.

She chose a small, swift faering, her father’s sturdy rowing boat. She checked the oars and unfurled its tiny, square sail.

With a strong push, Astrid launched her boat into the waves. The sea felt cold and vast, just like in her memory.

Each wave tried to pull her back, but Astrid held tight to the oars. She scanned the horizon, calling, 'Pip! Pip!'

The wind tugged at her braids, and the salty spray stung her cheeks. She kept rowing, her heart pounding, searching for her friend.
