A musical badger named Alex gathers his woodland friends to create a spring symphony, only to discover that the most beautiful music is made when everyone learns to listen to each other.

📖 Read the Story

Alex the badger loved sounds. He tapped, he clapped, he drummed! His favorite percussion instruments were two shiny, smooth pebbles.

Winter was ending. Tiny green shoots poked up. Alex felt a new song bubbling inside him, a joyful welcome for spring!

"Robin!" Alex called. "Will you join my spring orchestra? Your bright whistles would be perfect!" Robin chirped happily.

Next, they found Ferdinand the frog. "Ferdinand," Alex asked, "your deep, resonant croaks would make a wonderful rhythm!" Ferdinand winked.

Finally, they invited Squeaky the squirrel. "Your quick, enthusiastic chatters will add sparkle!" Squeaky twitched his bushy tail.

The friends gathered. "One, two, three, play!" Alex announced. Robin whistled, Ferdinand croaked, Squeaky chattered, Alex tapped.

Oh dear! It was a noisy jumble. No one could hear anyone else. It sounded like a big, messy tangle of sounds.

Alex sighed. "This isn't quite right," he mumbled. "How can we make a beautiful spring symphony if we can't hear each other?"

"We need to listen," Alex explained. "Really listen to what everyone else is playing. Then we can blend our sounds."

"Robin," Alex said softly, "please show us your song." Robin sang a sweet, clear whistle, high and bright.

"Wonderful!" Alex smiled. "Now, Ferdinand, your turn." Ferdinand let out a deep, resonant "Croak-croak-croak."

"Perfect!" Alex cheered. "And Squeaky?" Squeaky added his quick, enthusiastic "Chatter-chatter-chatter."

"Okay," Alex announced. He tapped his pebbles, a steady, gentle rhythm. Robin joined with a soft, flowing whistle.

Then Ferdinand added his deep croaks. They fit just right, like stepping stones in a babbling brook. It sounded harmonious.
